From the Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division; Project 8 was revealed in June last year with 600PS power unit, 5.0Litre Supercharged V8 under the hood. The supercar clocked a new record as the world’s fastest four-door car that lapped 2.238-mile on WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca track in 1min 37.54sec.
What Makes It So Spesh?
With 300 planned set to be built, we do not know how many of them will hit the roads. Project 8 is the lightest powerful sedan in the Jaguar range. It includes various deliberate modifications such as XE’s lightweight aluminium monocoque; bumpers are enhanced with cooling ducts to hone the incoming airflow, rear adjustable aerodynamic wing and diffuser, carbon fibre bonnet with integrated air extraction duct lessens 3kg weight over the standard aluminium part and reduces drag. To maintain the lowest kerb weight, the carbon fibre is used comprehensively throughout the car’s body. Project 8 is the first car from Jaguar to have a dedicated Track Mode which is a salient feature that adapts drivetrain and other control systems for track use.
For optimum performance on and off track, Project 8 is equipped with double-wishbone in the front and Integral Link suspension on the rear with stiffer springs and a manually adjustable Continuously Variable Dampers (Which allows 15mm lower ride height for track use). A new Carbon Ceramic Braking system is introduced that offers prodigious benefits in terms of performance in both wet and dry conditions. Unlike the traditional steel brakes; carbon ceramic brakes can handle higher temperatures and has top-notch heat dissipation capabilities. An industry-first use of F1 -style silicon nitride ceramic wheel bearings on a road car (helps in spinning faster than steel bearings), and incorporates a rear Electronic Active Differential (EAD) with oil cooler. The EAD functions along with the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics System to control torque distribution to each of the rear wheels .It also provides better power and traction on different road conditions.
This hand built car is made available only with Left-hand drive and all-wheel drive option worldwide; can clock 200mph and 0-60mph in 3.3 sec. Though the mighty German rival BMW M4 GTS set a lap time of 7.27 Secs at Nürburgring Nordschleife, Project 8 outstripped by 7.21 Secs (Source: http://fastestlaps.com)
“This Laguna Seca lap record is another powerful demonstration of the Jaguar XE SV Project 8’s performance credentials. “Designed, engineered and hand-assembled by Special Vehicle Operations, this record-breaking sedan is made for the world’s most demanding driving enthusiasts” – Michael, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director
