The 1960’s introduced the world to a different style of iconic cars altogether, including the birth of the muscle car, and the introduction of overall style and performance when it came to what people looked for in purchasing a vehicle. The 1970’s tended to steer away from performance and power in favour of style – even though the styles of the 1970’s sometimes left something to be desired. The 1980’s brought another rebirth and revolution in the world of cars and created some of the most recognizable consumer cars of all time.

DeLorean DMC-12

DeLorean DMC-12

The DeLorean was brought into pop culture immortality thanks to the Back To The Future movies, and while it was an extremely futuristic-looking car for the time, it, unfortunately, didn’t have the power to back it up. DeLorean’s are known for reduced throttle and a difficult to handle. But honestly, no one was purchasing them for their power at that point. It’s a car that will be recognized for decades to come.

Today, most Audi vehicles are known for their design and style, and for its time, the Quattro provided just that, as well. It was a solid-performing car that revolutionized four-wheel drive for newer models and was utilized as both a street and performance vehicle.

The 1980’s marked a return to the power car, and heavily focused on racing. The BMW E30M3 may be the pinnacle when it comes to 1980’s race cars, with a winning race record that beats every other car in history. The E30M3 introduced its own line of ‘souped up’ vehicles to follow, leading to another revolution in adding parts and ‘bells and whistles’ to cars in order to make them faster.

The 959 is one of the most iconic cars of all time, for more than one reason. With top speeds of nearly 200 mph, a turbo feature, and all-wheel drive, the Porsche 959 was the cream of the crop as far as 1980’s cars go. It is still a prominent fixture of Porsche today and is a shining star in many famed car collectors’ treasure chest. Not only is the 959 one of the best cars of the 1980’s, it is touted as one of the best cars of all time.
